A university has been slammed for allowing a sex toy firm to give impressionable female students free vibrators if they “reviewed” them at its fresher’s fair. The University of Gloucestershire welcomed sex toy firm Ricky.com and its “pleasure pod” at Wednesday’s daytime event. Founder Tom Thurlow then handed out the toys in exchange for “feedback” from the women – some as young as 18. The entrepreneur, 29, sparked outrage in 2013 when his dating site ShagAtUni launched a campaign which encouraged students to sleep with their lecturers. It was later banned. It is understood 12 women took up the offer at the university’s Cheltenham campus. The startup’s presence and how it was promoting its product has sparked outrage with some students and parents. One 18-year-old psychology student said: “I didn’t think it was appropriate and left but when I saw it later there was a line of girls waiting next to the tent. “It is crazy for a fresher’s fair – it’s supposed to be about clubs that people can join.” And an outraged parent of one student said: “I’m not a prude but this is too far. What kind of message does this send? “I’m all for liberalisation but this is something entirely different. There were immature 18 year old girls there thinking it’s normal to pleasure yourself in a tent full of people. “That’s not normal and it’s not the sort of thing the university should be allowing to happen at their fresher’s fayre.” Mr Thurlow brazenly promoted his firm, even tagging the university, before the event. He tweeted: “Forgot to pack your vibrator this term? Don’t worry students – Ricky.com has got you covered.” He added: “I said the students could keep them if they gave them a test run and gave me some feedback.” The university, which urges students to make their time studying “unforgettable”, was equally positive about the day. In a post it said: “We were expecting fab stalls, tons of societies and plenty of
#TeamGlos spirit.” When approached by the Daily Star today, Mr Thurlow, from Cheltenham, was unapologetic about the stunt which he described as “healthy”. He said: “I wanted to do something that is a fun and unapologetic approach to masturbation. “What better way to do this than letting students enter our pod and masturbate. “Early on in the day there weren’t any takers but after 1pm onwards there was crowds of students lining up to do it.” After the event, he tweeted: “Absolutely shattered but what an amazing response we got from the students for our Ricky Deluxe Bullet Vibrators. Amazing day.” A spokeswoman for the University of Gloucestershire said: “Ricky.com had a stand at Freshers Fayre to hand out free condoms to students as part of the Students Union’s responsibility to promote the message of safe sex. “The University of Gloucestershire and Students’ Union have no reason to believe that the inappropriate activity described by Tom Thurlow took place. "Members of staff and our security teams were in the marquee at all times a
