Tragedy struck on New Year's Day when a young couple were unlawfully killed in an explosive fire ignited by a "vengeful" ex-lover, a coroner has ruled. Coroner Paul Smith ruled Jay Edmunds, 27, Billy Hicks, 24 and Ashley Martin, 32, all died in a fatal fire on January 1 after Ms Edmunds broke up with Mr Martin four days before. The inquest at Boston Enterprise Centre were told Mr Martin "had a clear purpose of coming to Linconlshire" when he hired a van and bought a metal jerry can, fire starters, windproof matches, binoculars, a torch and a lock knife. Mr Martin then filled the can with 17 litres of unleaded petrol and parked the van outside Ms Edmunds home on Pear Tree Road. Shortly before 3am on New Year's Day one of Ms Edmunds flatmates saw Mr Martin with a knife and noticed he smelt of fuel. Moments later Natalie Hall saw a flicker and the house exploded in flames. Miss Hall said: “I jumped out of bed and went straight to Jay’s room. “I kicked the door and asked what was going on. “I did not know there was a third person in the room. “The next minute, the door opened and Ashely was there. “He pointed it straight at me - in front of my chest. “He did not speak. He had a crazy, angry look on his face.” She and flatmate Rachel Brian tried to save Miss Edmunds but saw flames underneath the door. Miss Hall said: “I saw the fire being ignited under the door. “About two seconds later there was an explosion. It shook the house.” She then ran back to her room screaming and escaped through her bedroom window. Miss Brian said she heard her friend shouting: “Let me out, stop hitting me. “Within seconds I could see flames coming out from under the bedroom door. “The smoke became thick and parts of the ceiling came down.” After the blast, Miss Brian said she tried to flee downstairs but the living room for was locked. She was then rescue by neighbour Kenneth Wood after he ran round to the house after seeing a “large orange glow”. Mr Wood said: “I got closer and saw a person in the window shouting I’m locked in. “I kicked the window as hard as I could but could not break it. “I shouted for other people standing in the street to help me but they wouldn’t.” After his shout for help, a middle eastern man helped him pick up a lump of wood and they smashed the window and pulled Miss Brian out. He said: “She was hysterical. “She was saying there were three others inside. “This incident has left me shocked and dazed. “I couldn’t believe the lack of help from other members of the public who just stood and watched.” Evidence from Mr Martin’s brother - Peter - was read to the hearing. He claimed when Miss Edwards ended the relationship, he kept repeating Mr Martin was too nice for her. Peter said: “Police told me on New Year’s Day that there had been a house fire in Lincolnshire and three people had been killed. “I was in shock when I heard the news. “
