A stricken woman claims she is lucky to be alive after a flesh-eating bacteria ravaged her hand after she visited a local nail salon for a manicure. Jane Sharp, from Tennesee, US, said she visited Jazzy Nail Bar, Knoxville, to get her nails done when she sustained a prick to her thumb during the procedure. Just a few hours later her thumb started to throb as the flesh-eating bacteria took hold and she was soon experiencing flu-like symptoms. On the advice of her daughter, who is a registered nurse, Ms Sharp sought medical treatment immediately when the swelling had begun to spread. The mother, who is now reportedly taking legal action, alleges that the doctor she saw informed her that had she not received medical help so quickly she could have lost her arm. She told TV station WTVF: “The doctors told us had I waited another hour it might not be a good situation. “I think of the man in Florida was dead in 48 hours from flesh-eating bacteria.” Medics confirmed that Sharp had contracted necrotizing fasciitis – better known as flesh-eating bacteria – and she underwent multiple surgeries in Knoxville and Nashville following the harrowing episode earlier this year. “I’m just lucky to be alive,” she added. Officials at the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance (TDCI) inspected the nail bar following Sharp’s complaint and found no problems. However, Sharp confirmed that she would pursue the legal action, WBIR reports. Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist with Vanderbilt, told WTVF these kinds of infections are quite rare but can happen. Bacteria is introduced under the skin through some sort of cut or injury. “Keeping [your wounds] clean, keep it covered — that’s the important thing,” he said. “And then watch it very carefully.”
