A woman has told of the moment five vicious dogs burst through her fence and mauled her two-year-old niece. Sandra McKevitt was looking after Ella at her home in Liverpool when the pack of dogs invaded the garden and began “tearing away at her like a piece of meat”. She told BBC show Defenders UK last night that the family had been in the garden when the attack started. "We were having a nice little picnic eating these cakes,” Sandra said, “I was aware of the dogs but they weren't barking, they just seemed, if anything a bit restless." Sandra's neighbour kept XL American Bullys — a breed which can grow to 11 stone in weight. They used their strength to break through the fence in the attack on May 7, 2016. She said: "The next minute there was this big bang, through the fence I just saw this big dog's head. “It was growling and it looked so vicious. I could see its eyes were wild and I thought 'we are going to have to move quick’.” Trapped at the bottom of the garden with Ella, Sandra acted quickly and told her other niece and nephew to go in the house and slam the door shut. She told them: "Go in the kitchen, me and Ella will be with you when we can." The dogs attacked Ella and her white top turned red with blood. Sandra said: "I picked her up, I was punching, I was screaming for help, Ella was screaming for her mum and her dad. "I was trying to make my way to the door and they were just jumping up and they were just tearing away at her like she was just a piece of meat. "I felt as if they were trying to get me out of the way to get to her. “They bit her on the leg, the cheek. They seemed to be trying to pull me down. "We managed to get to the wall and they managed to her off me, they were trying to drag her along the floor and I am pulling her back. “Next minute, they are all on her. I’m on them, pulling them off. “She was losing consciousness and I was thinking ‘please god, just let us get out of here, how are we going to get out?’" Their screams caught the attention of neighbours who jumped into the garden and tried to distract the dogs. Sandra said: "One of them had got Ella by the mouth and I remember hitting him on the head and he let her go and he ran off to the others up the garden. "And then I saw my chance to just scoop her up and run in through the back and out into the front where there was people there to help us. "I can still to this day hear the screams of her mum and her dad running up to see if she was alright. "Her mum running into the ambulance and then coming out with the shock at what she saw, she said later that she just didn’t recognise her." Ella was airlifted to Alder Hey Children's Hospital were she had to spend 12 hours in surgery. She stayed there for three-and-a-half weeks. Sandra said: "Her face just didn’t look anything like her, swollen, stitches everywhere, your heart just broke. "Her cheek was hanging off, you could see her scalp, there were cuts near her eye. "She was just bleeding ever
